On the final morning of last year's anniversary trip to Paris we decided it could be a lovely idea to return to our favourite city annually! So a year later here we were, catching the Eurostar from London for a celebration weekend. As we had last year, we treated ourselves to the standard premier service which meant more room, a quieter carriage and a tasty light lunch with wine.

We arrived at the Gare du Nord just before five, and by the time we'd queued to buy Metro tickets and travelled to the nearest stop to our hotel, Mabillon, it was almost six. We were impressed by the lobby of the Hotel Clement, and although our room was plainly furnished and small, it was quiet and suited our needs just fine - excellent Left Bank location, clean and comfortable, efficient WiFi.

We unpacked and freshened up, then headed out for the evening. We enjoyed a drink at the Café La Bonaparte, by the Eglise Saint Germain des Pres, a great spot for people-watching.

We then checked out the restaurants in the nearby streets. We settled on the Au Pied de Fouet, a typical Parisian style bistro. We got a table on the outside terrace where we had a lovely dinner. My choices of salad with blue cheese and walnuts, confit de canard and tarte tatin were all good, and the service was friendly - a lovely first evening back in Paris.

Happy anniversary! It's high time my wife and I paid a visit to the Amazing Paris...

It would appear that reports of the demise of romance are greatly exaggerated! You certainly picked one of the most romantic places to celebrate in and it looks like your first day looks to have gone without a hitch and been very enjoyable.

I must try that blue cheese and walnut salad salad, it sounds delicious, a nice strong Roquefort or Saint Agur would certainly hit the spot.

A very happy belated anniversary to both of you.

Hi Fergy, nice to hear from you :) I definitely recommend that salad, it's one of my favourite French starters (probably a main course for you!) A few leaves, a sprinkling of chopped walnuts and generous chunks of cheese - I'd go for the Roquefort for preference :)

As for going without a hitch, indeed it did - which is more than can be said for the anniversary itself, as you will read in due course :(

Happy Anniversary. Paris is the perfect place for it. We love the Hotel Clement. We've had the junior suite and also a room on the top floor with a view of St. Sulpice. These were decorated in pretty toile fabrics though. I didn't know they had plain rooms. Next time ask for one that has toiles . . . or a view.

Your meal was a great choice. That's the quintessential Paris first dinner. I opt for a nice goat cheese but honestly, any French cheese would be fine. We really can't get duck here without great effort. I miss that and usually eat duck and lamb several times a week when we're in France. You are so lucky to be near and have the Eurostar. I hope you have many more happy anniversaries in Paris.

Thank so much Sally :) That's great advice about the Clement, although we've already decided we may try to rent a small studio or apartment next year. With the current price of hotels in the city an apartment can work out cheaper and would make a fun change!

Thank you Henna - but who said anything about coffee?! At that time of day something stronger is called for so I drank a Ricard and Chris a beer I believe :)
