Howler Monkey, Lagarta Lodge

Our last full day in Costa Rica started with a treat, as a small troop of Howler Monkeys breakfasted in a nearby tree while we enjoyed ours on the restaurant terrace.

After completing the boring but necessary task of filling in our Passenger Locator Forms for the journey home, we decided to go for a walk in the nature reserve attached to the hotel, to which entry is free for hotel guests. We descended a long flight of stone steps to reach the trail which then led among the trees. There wasn't a huge amount to see (or we were too inexpert to spot it) but it was a chance to see a bit of the local coastal forest.

We did see a lot of butterflies, including some of the large vivid blue 'owl butterflies we'd seen at Selvatura in Monteverde. But of course it was almost impossible to photograph them! I had better luck with a dragonfly that settled on a twig near the path for some time.

But the wildlife highlight was the band of coati that crossed the path in front of me after I'd turned back.

Back at the hotel we changed into swimwear and went for a much-needed dip. We then spent time relaxing on loungers under a shady mango tree before lunch, and did more of the same after it, as well as a second dip. Later, for variety, we relaxed on our terrace instead! Well, it was our last day in this beautiful place, and our last in hot weather for some time, so why not make the most of it?!

We had a lovely last evening too, securing a table at the outside edge of the restaurant so we could enjoy the tail-end of the sunset with our pre-dinner drinks and the fresh breeze off the sea during our meal.
